There are 3 kinds of contour lines you’ll see on a map: intermediate, index, and supplementary.ġ. It would be thousands of years before cartographers (map makers) could chart large areas of terrain with any real accuracy. The first known maps to include geographical features were found in Ancient Rome. Essentially, topographic maps represent the three-dimensional landscape of Earth within the two-dimensional space of a map. Topographic maps use a combination of colors, shading and contour lines to represent changes in elevation and terrain shape. A map with contour lines on it is called a topographic map. Topography is the study of geographical features on a landscape. But after dynamite made the Nobel family extraordinarily rich, some accounts say that he was resentful of their riches and didn’t feel he was given enough credit for his work, writes Fant. "When I think of all the victims killed during nitroglycerin explosions, and the terrible havoc that has been wreaked, which in all probability will continue to occur in the future, I am almost ashamed to admit to be its discoverer,” he said of nitroglycerin after dynamite had become a relatively common substance. ![]() However, Sobrero, who had been badly injured in a nitroglycerin explosion during his work, was at first “mortified” to hear about Nobel’s work, according to the Nobel Prize website. The story of how much credit this budding industrialist gave to the inventor of nitroglycerin is a bit muddied by later conflict between the two men, but the Nobel Prize website and Nobel's biographer Fant both state that Nobel never tried to claim credit for that discovery. In 1867, Nobel’s discovery that nitroglycerin mixed with an absorbent substance was much safer to handle led to the invention of dynamite.Īsciano Sobrero was badly injured in a lab accident during one of his experiments with nitroglycerine. This early period of experimentation cost Nobel his factory, which blew up, and the deaths of a number of workmen as well as his brother, Emil. ![]() “The invention of the blasting cap inaugurated the modern use of high explosives,” the encyclopedia writes. A few years later, in 1865, he invented the blasting cap, which replaced the wooden detonator. When it was lit and exploded, the liquid nitroglycerin would also explode. The solution he devised was a small wooden detonator with a black powder charge that was placed in a metal container full of nitroglycerin. "Nitroglycerin was a much more powerful explosive, but it was so unstable that it could not be handled with any degree of safety.” Nobel built a small nitroglycerin factory to supply his experiments and set to work. “At the time, the only dependable explosive for use in mines was black powder, a form of gunpowder,” the encyclopedia writes. In the early 1860s, having completed his education, he began experimenting with explosives. He had a long interest in the use of explosives, the encyclopedia writes, influenced by the family business selling explosive mines and other equipment. A few years later, though, Nobel thought nitroglycerin’s explosive tendencies could be tamed.Īccording to Encyclopedia Britannica, Nobel studied at Pelouze’s lab during a brief stint in Paris while he was studying chemistry. The oil this produced was incredibly explosive, writes Nobel biographer Kenne Fant, and Sobrero considered it too destructive and volatile to have any practical uses. It was during his time with Peleuze, in the mid-1840s, that he came up with a substance he initially called “pyroglycerine,” made by adding glycerol to a mix of nitric and sulfuric acids. Pelouze in Paris, according to the Nobel Prize website. Sobrero, like Nobel, was a chemist who studied with professor J.T. I've played almost all iterations of the series as they've been released on the various consoles. How would you compare the Japanese audience to the American audience, in terms of the fan reception for Lethal League Blaze?ĭion Koster, Game Director/Creative Director: When it comes to style, Japanese design of all kinds is where I get a lot of inspiration from. I also think with the choice of 3D graphics, we were able to reach a wider audience. I think it's safe to say most of the people getting into the game were driven by our wild community. However, there was notably less exposure from YouTubers and streamers. In terms of numbers, it did similar or even slightly better in sales than Lethal League. Obviously, it really helped that we had quite the foundation with the original game already. Tim Remmers, Producer/Managing Director: The reception of the game was really good. Shacknews: What would you say the reception to Lethal League Blaze has been compared to its predecessor? As someone with a particular affinity for the series and given that the game has released on all major consoles this week, this seemed like a good time to reach out to the folks at Team Reptile for a chat about the making of Lethal League Blaze, the series' origins, and where it goes from here. It got a 3D graphic overhaul, built on the multiplayer modes, added a solo campaign, doubled down on the wacky characters, and even got some music tracks from Jet Set Radio composer Hideki Naganuma. Lethal League Blaze released on PC late last year and it expanded on everything that made the first Lethal League so enjoyable. Team Reptile looked to have put together a fun, one-off effort. The central premise revolved a mixture of baseball and pong, with two players batting around a ball, with the ball gradually picking up more and more velocity to the point that it becomes deadly to the touch. When the first Lethal League released five years ago, it looked like it had the potential to be a cult hit. ![]() ![]() How to do this in your case, is depending on the email program or service that you use.
